Knowing which spellings are most common is a helpful trick. In the case of long o, the letter O by itself at the end of a syllable is the most common spelling - 73% of the time (no, so). O-e is next but is only found in 14% of long o words (spoke, grove). Oa and ow are tied at about 5% each. OA is usually found at the beginning or in the middle of a syllable (coach, oats) and OW is usually at the end (grow, cow).
