The Freemont Lookout Tower in Mount Rainier National Park was built in the 1930s and is now a historic structure. It was used by firewatchers to spot smoke and lightning strikes and During World War II it was used for aerial surveillance. The tower is still fully equipped and is used occasionally for fire detection. We were fortunate on this day to have such beautiful weather and were able to see the Cascades and Olympic Mountains from this vantage point. | Wandering Out Yonder

Located about an hour north of Truckee, CA and near Sierra City, the Sierra Buttes offers miles of trails to hike and the historic Fire Lookout Tower that was first built in the early 1900s. Operational through the early 2000s it was staffed in the summer months by forest service personal. It's a great hike to take in the views and you'll also see Sardine Lakes along the way.
