In 1969, the fictional cartoon band The Archies topped the Billboard Hot 100 with “Sugar, Sugar,” a studio-made bubblegum-pop track performed by real session musicians. The song spent four weeks at No. 1 and ended the decade as Billboard’s biggest hit, making it a rare case of an imaginary group outperforming real bands.
