Having said that this does not mean that he denies his past at all just that he chooses not to let it define him. I would think it inevitable that he thinks of Maria and Gerald or is reminded of them on occasion.

Although I am unfamiliar with the entirety of the Sonic lore, I find it difficult to accept that a black and red hedgehog is in any way related to Maria.
