Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday named the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Terry Cole, as Washington’s “emergency police commissioner” as she carries out President Donald Trump's unprecedented decision to take over the Washington police department.

The position will give Cole the same authority as Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith, who reports directly to Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Terry Cole, the newly sworn-in head of the DEA, is now tasked with leading the federal takeover of D.C. police under the Trump administration.
