Arenado is a player the Cardinals have been shopping for quite some time now. However, the third baseman has a full no-trade clause in his contract. This means he has to agree to any deal that might happen. But both sides are open and willing to move on from each other; it just has to be the right fit.
Nolan Arenado had a shortened 2025 season, but interest from an American League team has not slowed, and that could be the beginning of his exit from the St. Louis Cardinals, where he has not made the impact the organization expected.
Trading away Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras, both to the Boston Red Sox, netted the Cardinals a boatload of young pitching. Two more veterans, Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado, stand out as candidates to be traded if St. Louis can get the right haul.
One option that Bloom has shot down at least twice, forcefully, is releasing Arenado and assuming the full burden of the roughly $37 million the Cardinals still owe on his contract. Such a move would immediately relieve whatever roster logjam Arenado is causing, but it would come at a steep financial cost and with no hope for return.
