CAIRO — Gaza's Rafah border crossing with Egypt was busy with activity Sunday as Israel said that limited travel to and from the territory is set to resume after years of near-complete isolation. Reopening the border crossing is a key step as the Israel-Hamas ceasefire moves ahead.
The Israel Defense Forces told Newsweek on Saturday that it struck affiliates of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza.
Israel will reopen the Rafah border crossing on Sunday for people to travel between Gaza and Egypt, a government agency said, the first opening of effectively the sole route in or out of the Palestinian territory since May 2024.
Hospitals in Gaza said Israeli strikes killed at least 30 Palestinians Saturday, one of the highest tolls since an October agreement aimed at stopping the fighting.
Israel carried out its heaviest airstrikes in Gaza in weeks on Saturday, killing over two dozen people including three children in attacks on a police station, houses and tents, Palestinian health officials said.
