Pope Francis appointed Edward Weisenburger to lead the 900,000 Catholics in the Archdiocese of Detroit, where he will be the sixth archbishop.

Most recently, he was the Bishop of Tucson, Arizona. There, he made headlines in 2018 when he suggested “canonical penalties” for Catholics who were involved in separating immigrant families at the US-Mexico border.

The longtime head of the Catholic Church in Southeast Michigan, Archbishop Allen Vigneron, is retiring, and his replacement has been named.
