The Storm Prediction Center has placed Austin and areas along the Interstate 35 corridor under a low risk for severe thunderstorms on Friday.
For weeks, winter weather has evaded North Texas. Temperatures have regularly been 10 to 20 degrees above normal. At least six new daily heat records were set. And each time a cold front has moved in, it hasn’t lasted long before warm conditions returned.
The map included with the update showed a 60 to 90 percent chance of at least 1 inch of snow in parts of Texas, specifically Stratford. Perryton, Gruver, and Dalhart had a 30 to 60 percent chance, with Amarillo and surrounding areas having a 10 to 30 percent chance.

With La Niña in place, snow is even less likely in South Texas this year, but history shows significant winter storms still occur from time to time.
