A winter storm pummeled the southern United States with ice and snow Tuesday. Here's how much snow fell in Florida, Texas, Alabama and more.

Snow fell on North Carolina beaches, making for a surreal sight along the coast. The rare blast of snow covered the sand and boardwalks as a winter storm hit the area overnight Tuesday, Jan. 21, into Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to the National Weather Service and photos shared on social media.

The powerful storm, fueled by a whirling mass of cold air originating from the Arctic, was expected to leave much of the southern United States in the low-teens or single-digit degrees.

Please be prepared for slippery travel escpecially in the Southern Piedmont near Troy and heading south toward Charlotte. Light snow may also cause slippery spots around Winston-Salem and Greensboro as the winter storm brings heavier snowfall to the North Carolina beaches.
