The Detroit Tigers leaned into selecting late-rising prospects as part of their haul in Day 1 of the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday. The Tigers began the night picking shortstop Jordan Yost with the No. 24 pick, followed by catcher Michael Oliveto 34th overall, righty Malachi Witherspoon in the second round and lefty Ben Jacobs in the third round.
Cincinnati got some good breaks during the draft. Katuska mentioned Kien Vu of Arizona State, drafted in the ninth round at No. 264 overall, was a player Reds' scouts didn't expect to be available at that point in the draft. Vu had a 1.059 OPS this past season, which was down from 2024 but his career OPS for the Sun Devils was still 1.062.
The Yankees started day two of the MLB Draft by taking another SEC pitcher. After selecting six in the first nine rounds last year, the Yankees picked Mississippi State junior left-hander Pico Kohn in the fourth round (134th overall) on Monday.
