A Russian citizen was released as part of an exchange involving American teacher Marc Fogel and will return to Russia soon, the Kremlin said, following intensified negotiations between Moscow and Washington.

Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in prison in Russia, which the U.S. has condemned as a wrongful detention, after a small amount of medical cannabis was found in his luggage.

A deal brokered by President Trump’s special envoy freed the schoolteacher, who was arrested in 2021 and was serving a 14-year prison sentence.
