Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced Wednesday that supporters of the initiative gathered more than the necessary number of valid signatures needed to make the ballot.

A conservative group has enough signatures on a petition to put a statewide voter ID initiative on the November ballot.

Under the Maine Constitution, as a citizen initiative, the issue now goes to the legislature for consideration. The legislature can choose to enact the bill as written or to send it forward to a statewide vote in November 2025. Voter ID is already law in 36 other states.
