Baltimore’s top prosecutor is no longer seeking to vacate the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, the man whose case garnered national attention in the “Serial” podcast over a decade ago.

Adnan Syed’s murder conviction will be reinstated after Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates announced the withdrawal of the motion to vacate judgment.

Serial podcast subject Adnan Syed was freed in 2022 after prosecutors questioned evidence presented during the trial over the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, but then in 2023, it was reinstated.

Meanwhile, Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates announced Tuesday that his office is withdrawing a previously filed motion to vacate Syed’s conviction in the 1999 killing of his high school ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, who was found strangled to death and buried in a makeshift grave.

Adnan Syed entered the Baltimore City Circuit Court on Wednesday morning for a hearing on a motion to have his life sentence reduced to time served, just hours after Baltimore prosecutors announced a decision to withdraw a motion to vacate his murder conviction.

Adnan Syed, whose murder case was chronicled in the 2014 "Serial" podcast, will return to court for a hearing on Wednesday as a judge considers whether to reduce his sentence under the Juvenile Restoration Act.

A Baltimore judge could rule that Adnan Syed can remain free as soon as Wednesday, no matter what happens to the decades-old murder conviction that gave him a life sentence. Baltimore Circuit Judge Jennifer Schiffer is slated to hear arguments Wednesday over Syed’s sentence after the “Serial” podcast subject requested in December to have it reduced under the Juvenile Restoration Act.
