Global markets are closing out a tumultuous week after the conflict in Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes, and sent crude prices spiking.

Middle East airspace closures have created a visible gap in global flight paths, forcing long-haul reroutes, increasing fuel costs and disruption, with potential knock-on effects for schedules and fares worldwide.

As long as Washington sees Iran at the edge of the Middle East rather than the center of “West Asia,” it will continue to fall prey to miscalculations.
