Safeway employees across Northern California are slated to go on strike if union leaders don't reach a contract with the company before midnight on Friday, KGO-TV reported Thursday. The workers are demanding wage increases that reflect the Bay Area's high cost of living as well as improved benefits.

The five centers set to close have served over 22,000 patients in the past year, many of whom are low-income with few alternatives for affordable health care.
