World number one Jannik Sinner opened his Australian Open title defence in blazing sunshine with a win over Nicolas Jarry on Rod Laver Arena on Monday that brought the scourge of doping in the sport back into focus.

Jannik Sinner was pleased to receive a warm welcome at the 2025 Australian Open in Melbourne despite an ongoing doping controversy. Sinner defeated Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in straight sets to qualify for the second round.

In the lead-up to the match, Jarry told Chilean newspaper La Tercera that he wished he had 'the same support' as Sinner from tennis authorities.

Iga Swiatek, a self-described “control freak,” is taking new precautions — including holding on to extra samples of medicine she takes, in case they need to be tested at some point — after a doping case she describes as probably the worst time in her life.
