The terms of a deal between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages are being finalised, a Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations has told the BBC. It comes as White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said a truce and hostage deal could be done "this week".

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement said Tuesday that a high-level delegation will arrive in the Qatari capital Doha to take part in finalizing the details of a potential cease-fire agreement in Gaza. Earlier, the Palestinian group Hamas said a Gaza cease-fire and prisoner swap deal is in “its final stages.”

Israeli officials believe that 98 hostages remain in Gaza and that about 60 are still alive. More than 100 hostages were released during a week-long truce in November 2023. Since then, some have died in captivity, while others were rescued by Israeli forces.
