Since the Detroit Tigers used the first selection in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Auburn pitcher Casey Mize, the former Springville High School star had compiled a 9-19 record in 59 career starts for the big-league team entering Tuesday’s American League game against the Seattle Mariners.
Mize, working with catcher Jake Rogers, dispersed his new mix expertly and allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings, with six strikeouts. He leaned heavy on sliders and splitters off his four-seamer and sinker, which averaged 94 mph, a tick down from his spring training norms.
Casey Mize allowed one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his season debut as the Detroit Tigers defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Tuesday night.
