HBO’s forthcoming adaptation of the Harry Potter books has inspired discourse ever since it was first announced back in 2023—due in no small part to author and series producer J.K. Rowling’s noted transphobia. But this spring, fans of the franchise recieved a few important casting updates.

Tom Felton, the Harry Potter actor, said he was “grateful” to JK Rowling, despite other stars from the film series shunning the author for her gender-critical views. Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the films, addressed the ongoing controversy around Rowling’s stance on transgender issues.
